ATC Ghana committed to environmental sustainability

American Tower Corporation, a major independent owner, operator, and developer of worldwide wireless telecommunications systems, of which ATC Ghana is a subsidiary, has played a vital role in enabling connection in a responsible, equitable, and sustainable way since its inception.

As the firm expands, its primary goal remains delivering crucial digital infrastructure throughout its global markets while operating responsibly.

In its newly issued 2022 sustainability report, the firm provides a thorough summary of progress made across the three pillars of its sustainability program - Environment, Social, and Governance.

American Tower has established a business strategy that fundamentally decreases not just its own environmental effect, but that of the whole telecommunications sector, in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Global Compact Principles on Environment.

A important component of this plan in combating climate change and protecting the environment is the adoption of the company's three-pronged approach to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This strategy comprises increased energy efficiency, renewable energy procurement and on-site generation, and advanced energy storage.

The corporation has chosen GHG emissions reduction objectives approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to drive the plan and facilitate demonstrable success. These science-based objectives aim to cut absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 40% by 2035 as compared to a 2019 baseline.

American Tower is actively contributing to the collective efforts to prevent global warming by decreasing its exposure to climate-related risks and seizing on climate-related opportunities by aligning its aims with the SBTi and the Paris Agreement.

American Tower exhibited its dedication and accomplishments in 2022 by reducing direct emissions (scope 1) by 11% from 2019. In Africa, American Tower has reduced its on-site fuel use by an estimated 43.5 million litres per year by investing around $345 million in renewable solutions and energy reduction measures since 2018.

ATC Ghana is investing in solar technology to offer backup power as an alternative to diesel-powered generators in order to minimize carbon emissions from its facilities. So far, over 80% of its facilities have solar backup power, with plans to transition more sites to solar power in the future years. These places are helping to cut GHG emissions and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future by capturing solar energy.

ATC Ghana established a program to appropriately recycle waste oil and batteries a few years ago to guarantee the safe and responsible handling of hazardous waste generated from its premises. Used oil and batteries are collected, treated, and recycled as part of this project to minimize inappropriate disposal and reduce land and water pollution.

In addition to programs at its operating locations to promote environmental stewardship, American Tower has been working globally to contribute to the World Economic Forum's 1t.org campaign to protect, repair, and cultivate one trillion trees by 2030.

Employees volunteered and participated in tree planting events in commemoration of Earth Day and World Environment Day in 2022, and the firm funded the planting of approximately 260,000 trees throughout the world. In Ghana, American Tower continues to assist the government's afforestation activities, such as Green Ghana Day, a nationwide push to plant trees.

ATC Ghana staff have planted around 200 trees in various areas since 2021 to enhance the health of the ecology.

American Tower's initiatives to minimize operational GHG emissions help clients meet their climate goals. While solar energy remains the most effective and widely available renewable option for the worldwide markets in which American Tower works, the firm is always looking for new ways to fulfill its objectives.

The significant investment in and priority of sustainability measures demonstrates American Tower's commitment to the industry's transformation to a low-carbon future.
